What you need: 

mosaic tiles, 

wood glue, 

box made of paper or thin wood, 

optionally joint grout

Cover the surface of the box completely with mosaic tiles.

Thus you'll know how to place the tiles, 

how many tiles you'll need, 

and how large the gaps between the tiles have to be.

Then stick the mosaic tiles onto the box one by one.

Let the glue dry.

You can leave the box like that.

But you can also grout the box to make the surface more even. 

Children should not work with joint grout.
Mix the grout with water and apply it onto the tiles. 

Wipe away superfluous grout. 

Let the box dry (time mentioned on the packaging).
