Macramé is a knotting technique.

Before you work on projects, practise the knots first.

Here you can learn to tie the two easiest knots.

What you need:

wool,

strings,

parcel string,

sisal,

cord,

or other

Use cheap, thick material for practising.
Cut off four pieces in equal length (about 1m / 1yd / 40in).

Tie the cords together at one side.

It works best if you hang the cords up somewhere. The knot is at the top.
Arrange the cords in such a way that they are next to each other.

The two cords on the outside are the ones you work with, the two in the middle are just left hanging down.
Knot the two cords on the outside around the other two.

Start with the right cord.

Place the right cord over the two cords in the middle and under the left cord.

Place the left cord under the middle cords to the right.

Pull the end of the left cord through the loop of the right cord.

You've just created your first knot.

Pull the knot tight carefully.
This knot is the basic knot.

Now there are two possibilities:

1. Start knotting always at the same side.
2. Start knotting at the left and at the right side alternately.

If you start knotting always at the same side,

your knotted item will look like a spiral (spiral knot).

If you start knotting at both sides alternately, your knotted item will be straight (straight knot).
