What you need:

80m / 87.5yd jute or sisal thread (3.5mm / 0.14in)

Cut the thread into 40 cords of 2m / 6.6ft / 2.2yd length each. Tie groups of four cords each together. The knot should be about 10cm / 4in away from the end.

Tie a basic knot to each strand of four.

All knots (also later ones) start at the right side.

Place all strands next to each other on the floor or on a table.

Start at the left side. Take the two cords on the right side of the first strand and the two cords on the left side of the second strand. Starting with the right cord, tie a basic knot. The two cords on the left remain untouched.

Tie the next four cords (the remaining two of the second strand and the two on the left side of the third strand) into a basic knot as well.
Repeat this pattern until all strands are connected.

Start the next row on the left side again.

This time the first four cords are knotted, then the next four, and so on.
Start the row after that on the left side too.

This time the first two cords are left out again.

Repeat this pattern until your doormat is long enough.
Tie the first four cords together close to the knotted part. Then tie the next four cord together, and so on, so that both sides of the mat look the same.
Tie the cords together tightly. Then cut off the rest of the cords.
