Giving away flowers on Valentine's day has a long tradition. 

That's why malicious rumours have it that Valentine's day 

was invented by florists. 

But that is not true.

The most popular flowers to give away on Valentine's day are roses. 

That is because people want to express their feelings 

with flowers and roses are the flowers of love. 

It's mainly the women who get the flowers. 

But of course it might be a gesture of friendship 

or love to give a rose to a man, too. 

After all, we live in times of equal rights. Nevertheless, 

there might be men who do not know what to do with such flower greetings.

On Valentine's day you are not only allowed to give flowers to your partner or heartthrob, but to everybody you like. 

This can also be a good friend, your mother or your grandmother.
You can also create flowers yourself as an alternative to buying flowers. 

Or you give away a potted plant.
