What you need:
wooden or cardboard tray,
black, white, and green paint,
brush,
small wood plugs,
pencil, ruler
Draw a chessboard onto the tray.
You need a square consisting of 8 x 8 (=64) smaller squares.
Draw the square in the middle of the tray.
Paint the rest of the tray green.
You can also undercoat the tray with white paint
first.
Paint the small squares black and white alternately.
Let the paint dry. You might want to apply a layer of clear coat too.
You need 24 wood plugs.
Paint twelve of them black, the other twelve white.
These are the counters.
