Cootie catcher

What you need:

square sheet of coloured paper,

optionally glue

Fold and unfold the paper diagonally in both directions from the same side of the sheet. Now the centre of the sheet is marked by two folds.

Fold all corners to the centre. Turn the paper over so that the open edges show downwards.

Again fold all corners to the centre. Do not turn over the sheet this time.

Fold the paper in half horizontally (not diagonally) and unfold it.

Fold the paper in half vertically and unfold it, too.

Put four fingers into the corners under the paper.

There are now four little hats and the figure can stand on four corners.

When the figure is turned upside down, it is also often called "Salt and Pepper" because you could place it on a table and use it as spice rack. Pepper, salt, and other spices are filled into the small funnels and are sprinkled over the food with the fingers.

There are many versions of the game "cootie catcher".

In one version the figure is used as kind of oracle. Put the thumbs and forefingers of both hands into the funnels as before. Now you can press together two funnels at a time * either you press together both forefingers and both thumbs or thumb and forefinger of each hand. Paint the inner sides of the figure in two colours.

Use one colour for the areas that can be seen when both thumbs are pressed against each other and both forefingers. Use the other colour for the areas that can be seen when thumb and forefinger of each hand are pressed together. One colour stands for the answer "yes", the other for "no".

When all four fingers are pressed together, no colour can be seen.

One person asks a question that can only be answered with "yes" or "no". The other person uses the "cootie catcher" and presses together all four fingers. The person who asked the question decides which side of the "cootie catcher" shall be opened. The colour that can be seen is the answer to the question.

As an alternative, you may want to create a finger puppet. Just glue together two of the funnels each and draw eyes and a mouth to the figure.
