What you need:
two egg cartons,
covering colour,
brush,
glue,
stapler,
scissors,
knife,
transparent paper
(e.g. coloured cellophane or parchment / greaseproof / wax
paper)
When you open the egg carton, there are four "peaks" in the middle.
Cut the tops off these
peaks.
Then cut out the ten round bottoms (on which normally the eggs are put) in both cartons. Finally, cut a large window into the lid of both cartons.
Keep the pieces you have cut out.
Paint the outside of both egg cartons and the pieces you have cut out in your favourite
colour.
Let the paint dry.
Stick transparent paper to all holes from the inside. First, cut the paper in form, then glue it to the carton. Applying the paper to the round holes might be a little tricky, but if you exercise patience, it will work out fine.
Each egg carton has a fastener at the front. Take the fastener of one carton and stick or staple it to the lid of the other. Do the same for the other side. Now your lantern is nearly
finished.
The pieces you have cut out of the lid are used as bottom of the lantern. Put the pieces crosswise on top of the other.
Cut them into form and staple them to the
lantern.
Make two small holes at the lantern on opposite sides.
Pull a piece of wire through the holes for
hanging.
